Foot chase leads to assault, weapons and drug charges

Winnipeg Police have a 23-year-old male in custody after he led officers on a prolonged foot chase Saturday night, October 19, 2019.

Police say that officers spotted the suspect on Portage Avenue who was wanted for an alleged aggravated sexual assault on October 5, 2019 against a female he knew.

As officers approached the male he took off running. During the pursuit he sprayed officers several times with bear spray. At one point during the chase a taser was used but it was not effective say police.

Air-1 tracked the suspect as he ran and officers were able to get near as the suspect stopped in the Ellice Avenue and McMicken Street area. When officers ordered the man to drop the bear spray he refuse and became more aggressive.

Two officers were hurt during the struggle with the suspect and several others were contaminated with blood. Those officers will be required to take strong antibiotics and antiretrovirals as a result.

The suspect was detained in custody.

Officers seized a small amount of Meth after a search of the suspect.

He is now facing multiple charges including Assault with a Weapon (x3), Assault Peace Officer (x3), Resist Peace Officer, Possession of Scheduled Substance Methamphetamine, Possession of a weapon for his alleged involvement.

The was also processed on the outstanding warrant for Aggravated Assault and Fail to Comply with Probation.
