Unlicensed daycare operator charged in child abuse case

Winnipeg Police have arrested and charged a 37-year-old female after an investigation stemming from a severely injured infant in October 2018.

Police say that the 6-month-old child was in the care of the adult female who ran an unlicensed, in-home daycare. On October 10, 2018, the parents noticed the child was in serious medical distress when they picked the child up from the daycare. Paramedics were called and the child was taken to Children’s Hospital where the medical team assessed the child with multiple serious head injuries as a result of significant head trauma.

Earlier in the day officers had been at the home of the daycare provider on an unrelated matter and had seen the child in good health.

Winnipeg Police Service Child Abuse Unit under took an extensive investigation and on June 26, 2019 arrested the daycare operator.

Annette Akerhor Onakpoya has been charged for her alleged involvement with Aggravated Assault.

She was detained in custody.
