Early morning fire caused by cigarette butt

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service says improper disposal of a cigarette is to blame for an early morning fire today, June 10, 2019.

Fire crews responded to a multi-family home on Ross Avenue just after 4;00 am.

When crews arrived they found a fire on the exterior of the single-storey home that extended into one of the suites.

One person was evacuated from the suite that was on fire however no injuries were reported.

Crews were able to get the blaze under control within about 30 minutes.

The fire appears to be accidental in nature but firefighters are warning the public to never use a plant pot as an ashtray. There are other materials in potting soil that are combustible such as peat moss and shredded wood. Cigarette butts can smolder for hours.

Smoking materials should only be put out in ashtrays or deep metal cans.
