Man stabbed in unprovoked attack downtown

Winnipeg Police say that a 56-year-old male was seriously assaulted early Sunday morning, April 7, 2019.

Just after 1:30 am officers found a male in the 300 block of York Avenue suffering from multiple stab wounds to his upper body. He was taken to hospital and required more than 50 stitches and staples to close the wounds.

Investigators say that the man had met another male and the pair began socializing when suddenly the suspect smashed a beer bottle over the victims head the stabbed him several times before stealing his bag and taking off.

21-year-old Jared Gerlinger from Brandon was located on Hargrave Street shortly after the attack. He is facing charges for his alleged involvement of Robbery, Aggravated Assault and Fail to Comply with a Condition of his Recognizance.

He was detained in custody.
