Building collapses during early morning Dauphin fire

Early Thursday morning, February 7, 2019, Dauphin firefighters were called to a commercial/residential building on 4th Avenue NW after receiving a report of a possible garbage fire. Dauphin is about 316 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.

When crews arrived they determined the fire was in the basement of the building and the flames were shooting up the stairs and out of teh front door of the structure.

The building had both commercial and residential spaces. The people inside the residential areas were evacuated as well as the occupants from a nearby home.

Officials from Dauphin Fire Department say that they tried to enter the structure but the floors were unsafe due to the fire in the basement. They said that the fire quickly caused the main floor to collapse into the basement.

Firefighters from neighbouring Gilbert Plains were called in to help with the fire.

There are no reports of injuries and the cause of the fire is unknown.
