IIU TAKES OVER ANOLA STAND-OFF INVESTIGATION

On January 6, 2017 RCMP responded to the report of a man with firearms uttering threats to family and police. The Man barricaded himself within a home just east of Anola, about 40 km east of Winnipeg. The man was the only person in the home at the time.

RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) deployed to the area to assist Oakbank RCMP. Police negotiated with the man throughout the night but shortly after 8:00am on January 7, 2017 police entered the home and discovered a 45 year old man dead inside the building.

Manitoba’s Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) was notified by RCMP of the incident and have taken over the investigation. IIU investigators were immediately deployed to the scene.

The IIU investigates all serious incidents involving police officers in Manitoba, wether occurring on or off duty. As there was a fatality involved the IIU has asked the Manitoba Police Commission to appoint a civilian monitor.
