Legislation amended to provide better safety in Manitoba courts

The province has announced that as of September 1, 2017, new legislation that improves safety and security at Manitoba courts comes into effect.

The amendments to the Court Security Act give sheriff officers the ability to deal with aggressive people and potential threats by giving them the ability to remove people from the court if they believe there is a threat or they think the individual may disrupt court operations. The legislation also clearly defines what is considered a prohibited weapon or is a prohibited item with in the court facility including drugs, alcohol or drug paraphernalia.

The changes come after a provincial review of the legislation and security policies within the system. The amendments to Manitoba’s legislation are similar to changes other jurisdictions have given to their sheriff officers.
