An early morning garage fire in the 400 block of Furby Street between Portage and Ellice Avenues was quickly put out by fire crews.

It started around 4:30 am Thursday, May 11, 2017. When crews arrived flames were shooting out of the structure but firefighters say that it could have been much worse if the fire had ignited several propane tanks stored inside the garage.

The damage to the structure and the contents within the garage is estimated to be about $30,000.

Investigators were still looking through the scene this morning as they search for evidence for the cause of the blaze.

An hour or so later, around 5:45 am, a home in the 700 block of Selkirk Avenue was set on fire.

Crews arrived to find a resident attempting to put out the blaze using a garden hose.

Three people and a dog were able to escape the fire before crews arrived but firefighters needed to rescue a pet bird left inside.

The cause of the fire and estimate of damages are unknown at this time.
