Firefighters Battle Blaze at Vacant Apartment Building on Balmoral Street

At 7:39 p.m. on Wednesday, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to reports of a fire at a vacant three-storey apartment building in the 500 block of Balmoral Street.

Upon arrival, firefighters observed smoke emanating from the structure. They initially launched a defensive fire attack from outside the building. Once conditions improved, they entered the structure to extinguish the remaining flames. Hose lines and an aerial ladder truck were utilized to apply water to the fire, and the WFPS drone was deployed to identify hotspots. The fire was declared under control at 8:43 p.m.

Crews conducted a thorough search of the building and confirmed that no occupants were present.

One firefighter sustained an injury at the scene and was transported to the hospital in stable condition.

The building had previously suffered damage from multiple fires, including incidents in June 2024, March 2023, February 2023, June 2021, and January 2021. Damage estimates for the current fire are not available at this time.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
