Twelve Manitobans Honoured with the Order of Manitoba

Twelve exceptional Manitobans were recognized today with the Order of Manitoba, the province’s highest honour, in a formal investiture ceremony at the Legislative Building.

Established in 1999, the Order of Manitoba honours individuals who have demonstrated excellence and achievement, enriching the social, cultural, or economic well-being of the province and its residents. Lt.-Gov. Anita R. Neville, chancellor of the order, will preside over the ceremony.

“The 12 individuals being invested onto the Order of Manitoba today represent a variety of sectors, achieving national and international success,” said Neville. “They have shown us innovation, ingenuity, and leadership, and it is a pleasure and privilege to recognize and celebrate these outstanding Manitobans.”

Appointments to the order are made by the chancellor based on the recommendations of an advisory council. Members of the Order of Manitoba are entitled to use the initials OM after their names for life. The list of all members is on permanent display in the Legislative Building.

The 2024 honourees include:

  • Elder Mae Louise Campbell: A Métis/Saulteaux woman dedicated to restoring and protecting Indigenous spiritual values and principles.
  • The Honourable Murray Sinclair (Mizana Gheezik), CC: Former Canadian Senator and chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.
  • Myrna Driedger: Advocate for missing and exploited children, founder of the Nellie McClung Foundation, and former Speaker of the Manitoba legislative assembly.
  • Dr. Brent Roussin: Manitoba’s chief public health officer and key figure during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Dr. Marcia Anderson: Physician and public health lead for Manitoba’s First Nations COVID-19 response team.
  • David Johnston, CM: Business executive and philanthropist, founder of Johnston Group.
  • Ronald Paley: Musician and leader of the Ron Paley Big Band.
  • Robert (Bob) Williams: Supporter of arts, nature conservancy, and the armed forces.
  • Chad Swayze: Firefighter and community fundraiser, instrumental in hosting the 2023 World Police and Fire Games.
  • Michel D. Lagacé: Advocate for the arts, culture, and heritage sectors.
  • James Cohen: Executive, musician, and philanthropist.
  • Connie Walker: Community builder and president and CEO of United Way.

These individuals have made significant contributions to Manitoba, and their achievements will be celebrated today as they join the prestigious Order of Manitoba.
