Province Commits $7.4 Million to Beach Safety Officers Program

As the summer season officially begins, Manitobans are being urged to prioritize beach and water safety while enjoying the province’s numerous picturesque beaches and lakes, according to an announcement made today by Tracy Schmidt, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change.

“Summer for many Manitobans includes a trip to the beach,” Schmidt stated. “With so many beautiful beaches and lakes in Manitoba, there are ample opportunities for residents to swim, soak their feet, and enjoy the water. We encourage everyone to remain vigilant in and around the water.”

The Manitoba government is strongly advising everyone, particularly boaters, children, and weak swimmers, to wear a life-jacket when engaging in water-related activities. It is also recommended that individuals understand their personal limits and only swim within a safe distance and duration. Swimming in designated areas or familiar environments is encouraged.

Visitors to select provincial park beaches can borrow life-jackets through the Life-jacket Loaner program. This year, a new station has been established at Hecla (Gull Harbour), Schmidt noted.

Life-jacket loaner stations are also available at other provincial park beaches, including Bakers Narrows, Birds Hill, Clearwater (Campers Cove), Grass River (Gyles and Iskwasum lakes), Paint Lake, Manipogo, Moose Lake, Rainbow Beach, St. Malo (Main and Sunset Shores beach), Spruce Woods, and Stephenfield.

Beach safety officers are stationed at three provincial park beaches: Birds Hill, Grand Beach (West Beach), and Winnipeg Beach. These officers provide services such as public education, emergency response, and first aid. However, Schmidt emphasized that parents and guardians must be water smart and always supervise children on beaches. For smaller children, parents and guardians should always stay within arm’s reach.

Schmidt also announced that the Manitoba government is committing to provide beach safety officer services at these three beaches through 2028, with a total funding of $7.4 million.
