A 34-year-old Winnipeg man is facing a number of charges after he allegedly fled from police in a stolen vehicle.
Police say that on May 4, 2023, a pizza delivery vehicle was stolen in the 400 block off Harbison Avenue West. The Lincoln Zyphyr had been left running and unattended around 9:10 pm when a man drove away with it. The delivery driver tried to stop the theft and was dragged by the car a short distance, causing minor injuries.
26 hours later on May 5, 2023, Police were called to the area Henderson Highway and Chief Peguis Trail for the report of a vehicle being driven erratically. The vehicle was the stolen Lincoln.
Police tried to pull the car over but when they activated their emergency lights the Lincoln fled at a high rate of speed. Police say the driver had no regard for public safety or traffic control devices while it attempted to evade officers.
Air1 was called in and quickly found the fleeing vehicle that was heading towards Lockport. With help from RCMP officers were able to use a tire deflation device to stop the vehicle near the St. Andrews Airport on McPhillips Street.
Once the vehicle stopped the driver tried to flee on foot. According to police the man continued to struggle with officers as he was being placed under arrest. The suspect was also found to be possession of two bank cards that had been stolen.
The accused was charged for his alleged involvement with:
- Flight while Pursued by Peace Officer
- Resist Peace Officer
- Robbery
- Drive without licence or invalid licence
- Possession of Credit Card x 2
He was detained in custody
