WINNIPEG WEATHER

Nearly 100 collisions Thursday evening illustrate the need to drive to the road conditions

The first significant snowfall of the season triggered a significant amount of collisions across the city on Thursday evening as temperatures dipped and roadways turned to ice.

Winnipeg police were busy managing responses to 97 collisions in 15 different locations over a four hour period.

Just after 6:oo pm reports of the collisions began rolling into police from the various bridges around town. Police responded to the scenes and quickly shut down access to the bridges until they could be sanded by Winnipeg work crews.

Nine people ( including 2 infants) were taken to hospital in stable condition and many more refused treatment. More than half the vehicles involved in the collisions needed to be towed from the scenes.

Although the roads, especially bridges, became slick this series of collisions illustrates the need for drivers to slow down and drive to the conditions of the road. Speed limits are meant for ideal conditions. As temperatures hover around freezing or below stopping distances become much longer.
