34 new cases, two more potential exposure sites

Manitoba Public Health announced 34 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, August 21, 2020, as of 9:30 am. The total number of lab-confirmed and probable cases stands at 830.

The current five-day COVID-19 test positivity rate is 2.0 per cent.

Five of the new cases are in the Prairie Mountain Health region, 19 new cases in the Southern Health region, nine cases in the Winnipeg Health region, and one in Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority

The cases identified today include:

Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority ONE CASE

  • One female in her 30s

Prairie Mountain Health Region FIVE CASES

  • One male under nine
  • One male between 10 and 19
  • Two males in their 40s
  • One male in his 50s

Southern Health Region 19 CASES

  • One female under nine
  • One female between 10 and 19
  • Three females and three males in their 20s
  • Two females and one male in their 30s
  • Two males in their 40s
  • Three females and one male in their 50s
  • One female in her 60s
  • One male in his 80s

Winnipeg Health Region NINE CASES

  • One female under nine
  • One female between 10 and 19
  • One female and two males in their20s
  • Two females in their 30s
  • One male in his 40s
  • One male in his 70s

Most of the cases in Southern Health are linked to a known cluster according to Manitoba Public Health.

Five people are currently being treated for the virus in hospital with one person currently in intensive care.

There are currently 265 active cases of COVID-19 in the province with 553 people listed as recovered.

The number of deaths related to COVID-19 is 12.

2,331 laboratory tests were completed on Thursday. According to Manitoba Public Health the total number of completed tests since early February to 122,291.

Two potential exposures may have occurred in Portage la Prairie and Winnipeg. The first exposure was Aug. 18, at the Canadian Tire store in Portage la Prairie, approximately from 1:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. while the second exposure was Aug. 19 at the Olive Garden restaurant at 51 Reenders Drive in Winnipeg from 12:00 to 12:45 p.m. 

Prairie Mountain Health Region risk level remains restricted (ORANGE). As of Monday, August 24, 2020, the use of masks has been mandated in all public indoor spaces and at all indoor and outdoor public gatherings. Public gatherings are restricted to no more than 10 people both indoors and outdoors within the region which includes the City of Brandon.

“These new steps are in direct response to the spread of the virus through large, family and other gatherings, which is why we are restricting gathering sizes and mandating masks in all indoor public settings,” said Dr. Brent Roussin, Manitoba’s chief provincial public health officer. “If public health begins to see other forms of transmission, additional steps may be required to contain the spread.”

The restrictions will remain in place for a minimum of two weeks. Public health says that further restrictions can be put in place at any time.

As of Thursday, August 20, 2020, there were 235 COVID-19 cases in Prairie Mountain Health region.
