3 WINNIPEG HOSPITALS LOSE EMERGENCY ROOMS

Seven Oaks, Victoria and Concordia ERs to close.

The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) announced Friday, April 7, 2017 that they will be closing the emergency departments at three of Winnipeg’s community hospitals. Victoria and Seven Oaks Hospital will be converted into Urgent Care Centres.

Concordia hospital will focus on orthopedic surgeries.

Emergency Rooms will be located in Health Sciences Centre, St. Boniface Hospital and Grace Hospital.

According to the WRHA the change in he way emergency medical services are delivered will allow them to capitalize on the specialities of each facility and focus their resources as opposed to spreading them across the city as is currently done

Milton Sussman, WRHA President & CEO

“Many patients wait too long for care, stay too long in hospital or need to visit multiple sites to get the care they need,” said WRHA president and CEO Milton Sussman.”These changes address systemic challenges that have hindered quality care and taxed our resources.”

“Doing nothing was not an option,” said Health Minister Kelvin Goertzen. He said patients wait too long for treatments and the changes being made will create efficiencies. “I recognize that this will likely be the most significant change in the health-care system in a generation,” Goertzen said.

A website has been setup to outline the changes and provide further information to the public.

The WRHA said that they expect some of the changes to happen “reasonably quickly” with the rest to follow in 6 to 24 months.
