Spring has sprung and that means it’s time for Winnipegers to put their slightly used, unwanted items on the curb then drive around the city picking up other people’s slightly used unwanted items.

The free giveaway weekend, May 11 and 12, 2019, is the chance for those wanting to unload their stuff and those looking for more stuff to hit the streets around the city and find that ultimate bargain.

If you are new to the city and are wondering what the giveaway weekend is all about here is all you need to know.

Place unwanted household items at the curb on your front street and make sure you have placed a label or sign on items indicating they are free to take or you might find items you didn’t want to be taken, gone! The city says its a good idea to remove items from your yard that you want to keep like lawn ornaments. When it’s all over Sunday night you also must take any item that was not taken off the boulevard.

So what can you get rid of this weekend? Pretty much anything although there are a few exemptions. Don’t give away anything that is infested with bedbugs like a bed, furniture or bedding. Don’t put out unsafe items and don’t try to get rid of toilets that have a flush volume of 13 litres or more.

If you are shopping for items left on the street respect the spirit of the event by only taking items that are marked as “FREE”. Don’t drive or walk on private property. Do not discard items you don’t want on private property either.

Make sure you check items closely to ensure they are safe. Watch out for children and pedestrians who may be more focused on that great find than on traffic.

Giveaway weekends are held in the Spring and Fall each year and they are a great way to recycle unwanted items.
