At approximately 1:15 p.m. on Sunday September 22, 2023, Central District General Patrol officers responded to a report of an assault in the 300 block of Assiniboine Avenue. Upon arrival, they were informed by the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service that they were providing emergency medical care to an unconscious female in the common area of an apartment building.
The female, identified as 52-year-old Lucy Wood of Winnipeg, appeared to be the victim of a severe assault and was suffering from serious injuries. Despite being transported in critical condition, she later succumbed to her injuries.
With the assistance of the Tactical Support Team (TST), officers located and arrested a male suspect within the building. The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Jules Desjarlais of Winnipeg, has been charged with Second Degree Murder, two counts of Assault, and Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm. He has been detained in custody.
The Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation. Family notifications have been made, and the community mourns the loss of Lucy Wood.
