“Physicians in rural communities have told us that at times they feel isolated, and many have left to work in larger centres or facilities where more people and resources are available,” said Health, Seniors and Active Living Minister Kelvin Goertzen. “To address this, the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority has been implementing new, team-based models of primary care.”
The doctors will spread out among several communities over the next few months. Ashern, Teulon, Stonewall, Selkirk and Beausejour will see two new doctors each. Pinefalls and Gimli get three and one doctor goes to Brokenhead, Arborg and Eriksdale.
Three additional doctors who are specialists have also been recruited by the health region to provide palliative care, surgical and hospital services.
