13 new variant of concern cases identified

66 new cases of COVID-19 identified in the province today. Four cases have been removed due to data correction. This brings the net-new number of cases today to 62. One death was reported due to the virus.

The person who died from COVID-19 is identified as:

  • a female in her 70s from the Winnipeg health region.

The five-day test positivity rate is currently 3.8 per cent provincially and 2.7 per cent in Winnipeg.

The total number of lab-confirmed cases in Manitoba is 32,350.

Today’s cases are from the following health regions:

  • four cases in the Interlake-Eastern health region;
  • 36 cases in the Northern health region;
  • zero case in the Prairie Mountain Health region;
  • seven cases in the Southern Health–Santé Sud health region; and
  • 19 cases in the Winnipeg health region.

There are currently 1,153 active cases of COVID-19 in Manitoba with 30,290 people listed as recovered.

164 people are being treated in the hospital of which 55 are considered infectious. 22 people with the virus are in Intensive Care Units with 10 of them still considered infectious.

The number of new confirmed variant of concern cases announced today of B.1.1.7 (UK variant) is five and for B.1.351 (South Africa variant) is eight. This brings the total number of cases related to variants of concern to 22 in Manitoba.

Public health noted that all the variant of concern cases reported today are from the Winnipeg Health region with the majority related to travel or close contacts. Most of the South Africa variant case were detected through retroactive screening of samples from February.

Officials noted that there is no evidence of widespread community transmission of either variant at this time.

907 Manitobans have died since COVID-19 first arrived in the province. Due to a data correction, one death that had been reported earlier has been removed.

1,235 tests were completed yesterday. Since the virus first arrived in February 2020, there have been 539,998 tests completed.
