11th ANNUAL EARTH HOUR SATURDAY

Turn off power at 8:30 pm and be a part of Earth Hour

It was an initiative that started ten years ago in Australia and since then has grown into a world wide statement on climate change and saving the planet.

Earth Hour takes place at 8:30 local time where ever you happen to be in the world. Six continents, 170 countries and 24 time zones will unite for one hour through a simple, painless action.

For one hour World Wildlife Fund  is asking everyone to turn off as much power as possible and focus on climate change. The hope is one unified global message can be sent so that we can focus on saving our planet.

In Manitoba the provincial government is encouraging all Manitobans to participate in Earth Hour

“Participation in Earth Hour is one small and easy way to make a difference for our environment,”Sustainable Development Minister Cathy Cox said.  “On behalf of the government, I encourage all Manitobans to participate and show their support by turning off their lights for one hour tomorrow evening.”

The minister said the provincial government will participate by turning off non-essential lights in government-owned provincial buildings.  Provincial employees have been directed to turn off computers, monitors and lights in their offices before leaving work on Friday.
