Ten people are homeless as fire rips through rooming house

The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team is trying to help ten people find new places to live after a fire ripped through a rooming house Monday night, September 9, 2019.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a blaze in a two and a half storey rooming house in the 400 block of William Avenue around 6:15 pm.

When crews arrived they encountered heavy flames and smoke on the upper two floors of the building.

Although an offensive attack was launched conditions forced the crews out of the structure and continue with a defensive approach.

Eventually firefighters were able to knock down the fire to a point that they could go back inside and completely extinguish the blaze.

The fire was declared under control about an hour after crews were called.

The people inside the burning building were able to get out before emergency crews arrived. No one was seriously hurt but one person was assessed by paramedics on scene and didn’t require further medical attention.

The fire is under investigation.
