If noise is not your thing then La Roca on Smith Street in Winnipeg probably won’t be for you. Ok now that that is out of the way, this little gem on Smith street is definitely worth going to if you love Mexican inspired cuisine.
I went to this new downtown establishment on a Thursday night around 10pm with a couple of friends. It was nearby and we were hungry. The inside is your typical trendy bar / restaurant atmosphere aimed at the 20 something crowd. Booths line the walls with a few tables scattered throughout. The general noise level is high and the music was played at a level reminiscent of an arena concert (Did I mention it is loud in there?).
The food however is fairly good…
The three of us started with the chips and queso. It was fresh, tasty and plentiful for an appetizer.
For our entrees we all decided to try the tacos, since that is pretty much the list of the main dishes that were on offer and share. We ordered the pork, the chicken and the shrimp.
The pork tacos were quite good, although I have had better, but the amount of onion used was a little overpowering. I would order them again but I would ask them to go “easy on the onions”.
Shrimp tacos were fresh and tasty but as you can see in the picture they went a little craze with the avocado sauce. Again a case of “less is more”.
Chicken tacos were excellent. Good balance of flavours, tasty and fresh. All three of us agreed that the chicken were the best of the bunch.
Overall I did enjoy the food and experience. It is nice to see an original take on classic Mexican dishes. I did find the price point a bit high for what is in essence “street food”.
All our meals came with sides and although they were good they were nothing special.
La Roca is definitely worth checking out but do yourself a favour and sit on the patio or upper deck.
