A crash between a car and a semi-trailer has left one dead.
It happened Monday night around 6:00 pm near Oakland Road and the Perimeter Highway.
Police say that the semi was turning northbound onto the Perimeter and in doing so crossed the southbound lanes of the highway and waited for traffic to clear in the northbound lanes before continuing with his turn. As the semi was waiting the trailer from the truck was blocking parts of the southbound lanes. A car, driven by a 73-year-old male from Winkler, slammed into the trailer, getting wedged beneath.
The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. The 43-year-old male driver of the semi was not injured.
RCMP investigators are looking into the cause of the collision.
Just prior to the accident witnesses say that a dark-coloured SUV had to swerve to avoid hitting the semi. Police say the SUV did not stop but they say the driver may not have been aware of the collision that happened after it had passed the truck. RCMP are wanting to speak to the driver of the SUV or anyone else who may have witnessed the collision.
Investigators can be contacted at: 204-984-6913.
According to emergency crews, the road conditions at the time of the crash were good and not slippery.
