Smoke caused an evacuation of at Winnipeg’s airport on Saturday afternoon, August 19, 2017, just after 4:30 pm. An air conditioning unit failed causing smoke which triggered an alarm. Passengers and visitors were ushered outside of the building while officials investigated. A water bomber from Newfoundland and Labrador and 13 firefighters from Minnesota have been called in by Manitoba under the resource-sharing agreement the province has with other jurisdictions. The crews and equipment were requested to help fight wildfires. So far this season there have been 443 fires in Manitoba. Fires are also burning in Saskatchewan, Alberta, BC and the Northwest Territories. Winnipeg Police report that around 11:15 pm on Friday, August 18, 2017,  officers patrolling in the area of Sargent Avenue and McMicken Street were flagged down. The officers were told that a man was injured. When police arrived on scene they found an 18-year-old male suffering from stab wounds.
